Finance Major

Many people choose a finance major because they are not exactly sure what they want to do for a living. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as no matter what you end up doing, you will be glad you have a background in finance and the knowledge you gain will certainly come in handy. Having a finance major also allows you to step up in whatever industry you truly want to be in.

I started my career with a Finance degree but have worked in IT positions pretty much since day one. My interests were in the computer field, but also wanted something to fall back on in case changes in IT industry made it difficult to get the type of job I wanted. This plan worked out perfectly as my Finance background and degree have helped me achieve high level IT positions that I would have not been qualified for otherwise.

This same thing can apply for nearly any industry or anything you want to do. Choosing a finance major qualifies you for many different jobs within Finance, but also allows you to manage departments or small businesses in nearly any sector. For me, I use my Finance experience to manage very large IT budgets and planning for the future. I kind of chose to be a finance major by default, without giving it nearly enough thought. However, I don’t regret it for a second and it has helped my career every step of the way.

Choose the Right School for your Finance Major

Finance MajorThere are many excellent colleges in nearly every state that specialize in finance and accounting. This makes it pretty easy to be able to go to school cheaply as you can often get dramatic discounts from schools in your home district. There is really no reason to get out of school with massive debts in this uncertain future. Of course, there is a difference between a top 10 school and the local college that is 1200% cheaper. However, in the grand scheme of things you can get whatever you want out of life regardless of where your degree is from.

If you choose a finance major, the only real difference as far as which school you go to is your starting offer. Some large companies only recruit out of the top colleges. However, if you do well in your first job there is really no limit to where your finance degree can take you. Traditionally, the top level job would have been a CFO for a large company. However, these days finance and business degrees kind of go hand in hand and either way you will someday be qualified for a CEO position or certainly you can become a member of one or more boards.

Is being a Finance Major Right for You?

If you have an interest in money and numbers, this is the perfect degree for you. There are few other programs that you can attend that have more potential than being a finance major. No matter what you want to do and where you want to do it, this field will help you achieve your goals. Every business unit within an organization can benefit from someone that understand the finance and accounting end of things. Indeed, if you ask the leaders of nearly every group within a large company what they majored in, the answer will be they were a finance major more often than not.
